ABOUT APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR

WHAT IS APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR?

Apprentice of the Year is New Zealand’s leading national competition for carpentry apprentices who want to back themselves, learn fast, and see what they’re capable of.

It’s about more than being good on the tools - apprentices are challenged to think about their projects, explain their decisions, and show how they’re growing into confident professionals.

Delivered by Master Builders in partnership with CARTERS, the programme celebrates effort, ambition, and potential, helping apprentices build skills, gain recognition, and take an important step toward becoming future leaders in the construction industry.

Who can enter?

Apprentice of the Year is open to ALL carpentry apprentices across New Zealand who are ready to challenge themselves and take the next step in their careers - you don't need to work for a Master Builder and you can be trained by any appropriate training provider.

Whether you’re in your second year or nearing completion, Apprentice of the Year is designed for apprentices who want to test themselves against the best and grow through the experience.

If you’re motivated, willing to put yourself forward, and ready to learn - you’re exactly who this competition is for.

WHAT ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR?

Judges aren’t just looking for the fastest build or the flashiest project.

They're looking for well-rounded apprentices who demonstrate:

• Problem solving
• Effective commnuication
• Drive to build a long-term career in the industry

Apprentice of the Year is about capability and where you’re heading - not just where you are today.

Apprentice of the Year is delivered by Master Builders in partnership with CARTERS, with support from BCITO, Builders Academy, and ACC.
